Children’s Mental Health

Children’s mental health is important as it allows young children to develop the resilience to cope with whatever life throws at them and grow into well-formed healthy adults. Children that are mentally healthy have a positive value of life and function well at home, in school, and in their communities.

To cope with mental health, it is important that caregivers provide support to young children. Here are a few ways to help young children to cope with mental health:
Be present – make sure you carve out time to be with the young person one-to-one and put all of your differences aside.

Really listen – listen to the young person and their feelings. Take them seriously and do not judge them. Paraphrase what they say to clarify you understand them.
Have quiet time together -it will encourage the young person to open up naturally.

Be a good role model – the caregiver should think about their own behaviour in front of the young person when dealing with emotions, not show frustration and anger, as this will impact how they behave and cope.
stick to commitments – follow through on your commitment to spend time with them.

Get arty – being creative together and encouraging the young person to tell their story could help them learn and to express emotions in a healthy way.
